Why Use a Professional?

In keeping with IPNOC vision of educating the public on professional photography, we would like to offer the following compelling reasons for choosing a professional photographer for your needs:

Equipment:  The majority of people in America own a camera and know how to operate it.  This however, does not make them professional photographers.  I own a keen set of knives and a sewing kit, but I doubt you will want me to relieve you of your ailing appendix.  Professional photographers invest a great deal of money in the equipment they use.  Carrying redundant equipment and the expertise to troubleshoot and quickly substitute a failing component can make the difference between having photos from your wedding day… or not.  Professional equipment is also manufactured to remain reliable under the rigors and adverse conditions often associated with constant commercial use.

Expertise:  Professional photographers never stop learning their craft.  A professional in any field will spend countless hours and investment in their education.  In photography, you will want someone who not only knows their equipment like the back of their hand, but can then look at the back of that hand and discern subtle nuances in light and texture, and translate them into a striking image. Ultimately, the challenge for photographers is to convert the three-dimensional world we live in, onto a two dimensional piece of paper, while retaining the illusion of the third dimension, depth.

Flexibility:  Like anything in life, things do not always go as planned.  A professional photographer will be able to adapt to changing conditions.  We may have to dodge changing weather conditions, work around last minute scheduling changes, or perhaps fill in for a groom that is a no-show (Hey, why not? After all, we’re already at the wedding, and dressed appropriately).

Overall Professionalism:  Quality photography is a fundamental starting point to choosing a professional photographer, but it is not the whole story.  Personality will also be an important factor in your decision.  You and your family will be spending a stress-filled, emotional day with your photographer, whom many of them have never met before.  Your photographer should be pleasant and willing to remain flexible.  Swearing, off color remarks, and yelling are never acceptable.  They should also be dressed appropriately for your event.  While I would love to tell you about the last Harley shop I visited, the necessity for me to wear the T-shirt with their logo on it to your wedding is unfounded.  A sharp-dressed professional exhibits confidence and respect for themselves as well as your gathering.

Reputation:  The advantages to hiring a professional goes well beyond their interaction with you.  Photographers and vendors who repeatedly show up on the ‘preferred vendors list’ of venues are often there for good reason.  This is a good indication that their professionalism is in keeping with the high standards of that particular venue. They are staking their reputations on it. Wedding and event coordinators are more comfortable and confident when you use professionals that have proven themselves on their premises.  This will in turn give you heightened confidence as well as other vendors involved.  This knowledge that we will show up organized, on time, properly dressed and properly equipped enables them to focus on taking care of you.  Not getting caught with our mouths open under the chocolate fountain is also a big plus. (keyword here is ‘caught’).

On behalf of the photographers in the IPNOC, we would like to thank you for your consideration when choosing a professional photographer for your upcoming special event. If you have any further questions or would like to schedule a meeting with any of our members, please feel free to contact us.  Thank you,
